IrreveRANTS: No-BS AI Meets the Marketing Hype Cycle

We marketers know the drill. Every shiny new tech rolls through the same hype cycle: huge buzz, wild promises, inevitable disappointment, and then…eventually…steady, practical use.

According to Gartner’s AI Hype Cycle, we’re right on schedule. AI spiked the curve of inflated expectations, and now it’s sliding into the “trough of disillusionment.” And yeah, the rumblings have started: “AI isn’t living up to the hype.”

Thing is, we’ve been here before. Social media. Mobile apps. Blockchain. VR. Same playbook. And the operative word is cycle. The trough isn’t the end, it’s just the reset before we climb back up to the slope of real value.

So why do we, as marketers, jump in so early? Not just because we like to look cool in front of the C-suite. It’s expected of us. We’re the competitive edge, the experimenters, the ones who are supposed to sniff out the next lever for growth before anyone else does.

That’s why a No-BS AI (NBSAI) approach matters. It acknowledges the cycle, but keeps us grounded:

  • We stay human-driven. Strategy, creativity, and insight still start with us. AI is the assistant, not the architect.
  • We use AI where it scales our impact. Faster research, quicker drafts, more customer insights—without losing the human spark that makes messaging resonate.
  • We experiment with purpose. Early adoption doesn’t mean chasing every shiny toy. It means testing, learning, and discarding what doesn’t serve the strategy.

Think of AI like a rookie team member. They’ll crank out a first draft in seconds, but they need a sharp-eyed marketer to edit, contextualize, and shape it into something that actually works. That’s where the edge comes from—not the tool itself, but how we use it.

The cycle always turns. The trough won’t last. AI will settle into equilibrium, just like every other “disruptive” tech we’ve seen. And when it does, the marketers who used this time to sharpen their human + AI playbook will be the ones pulling ahead.

So let’s skip the panic. Let’s stop chasing trends for the sake of being “innovative.” Let’s lead with strategy, test with purpose, and keep our edge sharp. That’s No-BS AI.
